Lyrics

The author’s gotta have a purpose

Got to have some P.I.E.

Persuade, Inform, Entertain

Don’t forget to have some

Pie (P.I.E.)

Today I’m gonna write something,

But I’m not sure what to say

I must choose my words carefully

It’s the only way to explain.

Somebody say “P” > P!

P is for persuade

It’s the first letter in our pie

It means we’ve got to convince our readers that we know what we’re talking about here’s why,

Because…

The Author’s gotta have a purpose

Got to have some P.I.E.

Persuade, Inform, Entertain

Don’t forget to have some

Pie (P.I.E.)

Somebody say “I” >I!

I is for inform, we’ve got to teach the reader what we know.

Inform means to educate

Our words will help our reader’s grow

Somebody say “E” > E!

E stands for entertain.  Our reader’s got to have some fun.

Do you enjoy reading every single word you write?

Chances are so will everyone!

You see…

The Author’s gotta have a purpose

Got to have some P.I.E.

Persuade, Inform, Entertain

Don’t forget to have some

Pie (P.I.E.)

PICK. ORGANIZE. WRITE! (POW!)

P is pick a topic

O is organize

W is write write

write write write

P O W!

Pick a topic organize and write

P O W!

Pick a topic organize and write

B-B-B-Brainstorm

a bunch of topics,

this is the very first step.

Write the topic on the middle

of your page,

List everything you know,

you can make a word web

Now that you’ve got

your thoughts

in front of you,

displayed, and out

of your head

It’s time to organize

with an outline, a map,

a writer’s best friend.

P O W!

Pick a topic organize and write

P O W!

Pick a topic organize and write

What is an outline?

It’s like a story’s skeleton,

a framework, essential tool.

Like a GPS for your car

to help your driver

get to school.

Just like a map, it directs you

where you’re going,

that’s why you create this first.

It’s not full sentences,

just small notes from which

your writing will emerge

P O W!

Pick a topic organize and write

P O W!

Pick a topic organize and write

P is pick a topic

O is organize

W is write write

Lyrics

Pump, Pump, Pump it up!

I’ve finished my story, I’m done

Pump, Pump, Pump it up!

My story’s all done

Pump, Pump, Pump it up!

I’ve finished my story, I’m done

Pump, Pump, Pump it up…

Wait, stop!

You may want to forget it,

but you’ve come this far.

It’s time to re-read and edit.

It’s not even that hard.

First things first!

You’ve got to read your work aloud. (Aloud)

We’re listening for fluency,

how smooth your story sounds. (Listen up)

You might come across a verb whose tense

does not agree with its noun or pronoun.

Listen up, carefully;

“Hans be running” sounds funny…

“They is running” ‘s not ok (no way)

It’s so easy to get pumped up

and overlook small mistakes. (switch it up)

Now, “Hans is running,” or,

“They are running”, feels good to say aloud

because you’ve properly conjugated

your verbs with your nouns.

CHORUS

Listen up! Now editing is all

about the way your words look. (look at that)

There are a certain set of rules

for publishing a book.

Mechanics are the name

for what I’m about to address:

Capitalization, spell check,

punc-punctuation,

don’t forget “indent.”

Take another really close look

with your eyes.

Are there any proper nouns

you forgot to capitalize..?

Alright stop!

See “doug” with a lower case “d?”

You better pump, pump, pump, pump it

Upper Case!

See “Ball” with a capital “B?”

You better down down down size to a

lower case.

“mister Lemur” with a lower case “m?”

You better pump, pump, pump, pump it

upper case.

Re-read, now check it all again, don’t stop!

CHORUS

You won’t want to regret it.

You’ve made a work of art.

After revisions, let’s edit.

Need help on where to start?

You should make sure to circle

any words that might not look correct.

You can use a dictionary when necessary,

for meaning and spelling checks.

At the beginning of paragraphs

let us not forget to leave some room to indent.

We’re almost done editing now…

Pump, Pump, Pump it up!

My story’s almost done.

Pump, Pump, Pump it up!

This editing is… (..is it?)

Pump, Pump, Pump it up!

My story’s almost done.

Pump, Pump, Pump it up!

This editing is kind of fun!

Last step: gotta punc-punc-punctuate

(sing it) (punc-punc-punctuate)

Re-read! Better punc-punc-punctuate,

my periods and commas…

never know if my writing will be seen

by President Obama.

Now punctuation also includes parentheses.

Use them to add something extra,

put these words in-between.

Don’t confuse exclamation

and question marks.

One’s for wonders and

the other one’s for exciting remarks.

Lastly, don’t forget

quotation marks, and then,

use them when someone is speaking.

“Time to EDIT,” Jonny said.

CHORUS

You won’t want to regret it.

You’ve made a work of art.

After revisions, let’s edit.

It’s not even that hard.

Pump, Pump, Pump it up!

I’ve finished my story I’m done.

Pump, Pump, Pump it up!

Wait, stop!

Time to publish.

PROMPT SONG

What should I write about?

Can somebody help me?

Help me figure out,

what these words should be.

Give me some ideas,

like a thought or a question,

that really turn my gears.

Listen up to the lesson.

If you won a shopping spree,

what would you buy?

What if you had two noses

and only one eye?

Where would go if

one day you could fly?

What’s your favorite

animal and why?

If you ruled the world

what would you do?

Have you ever solved a mystery?

What were the clues?

If you could have a mutant power

what would you choose?

Describe your favorite pair of shoes.

CHORUS

If you had to be an insect,

what would you “bee?”

Describe your life

if you lived in a tree.

If you were on an island

stranded at sea

and you could only have 3 things,

what would they be..?

Do you like to cook?

Why or why not?

What would you do

if you were a robot?

Do you like to camp?

Describe the best spot.

What do you do when it gets hot?

CHORUS

Don’t just write down your

responses with only few words.

Think about the reasons.

What do you believe in?

This isn’t about school.

This is all about you

bettering your craft.

This song was created

to offer you various paths.

Go with your gut right now.

Whatever path feels right.

Now it’s lights, camera, action!

Time to write.

CHORUS

This isn’t about school.

This is all about you

bettering your craft.

This song was created

to offer you various paths.

Lyrics

Invite me into your world.

Set the scene, use your words,

describe the senses.

All stories take place

in a setting.

Close your eyes,

what do you see?

Imagine your story’s

first scene.

Describe this world with

all five senses.

What will I feel, hear,

see, and smell?

What will I taste?

Give me details.

Sometimes it helps to draw

a sketch of what you see.

Put your pencil to the page,

let your imagination free.

Now that you’ve captured

what you see inside your head,

use your words to paint

a picture and let me in.

CHORUS

The next thing you can do is

decide on a character… or two?

Maybe three, or four, or five?

You get to bring them all to life!

Describe them with some traits.

What are they like? Can you relate?

Are they kind hearted, or intense?

Are they optimistic, or depressed?

A physical trait describes how

a character appears.

Are they tall, short, female,

blue eyes… do they have a beard?

A character trait explains

about what they are like.

Are they bold, crazy, bitter,

frustrated, or nice?

What motivates them..?

CHORUS

Who will I meet? What traits

describe your characters?

What motivations do they have?

What do they perceive

as right or wrong?

Motivation means: “What drives

to want and do the things

we do and why?” What forms of

passion and desire lay inside?

To see a point of view, to walk

in your character’s shoes,

you’ve gotta write so we can feel

like the world you’ve made is real.

CHORUS

Who will I meet? What traits

describe your characters?

What motivations do they have?

What do they perceive as

right or wrong?

What motivations do they have?

What do they perceive as

right or wrong?

What motivations do they have?

What do they perceive as

right or wrong?

Lyrics

Take a mental a picture,

but not just of what you see.

Remember what you taste and hear,

the scents and your feelings.

Put them all together

to describe a flash in time.

Use all five of your senses

when you brainstorm to write.

Life is full of small moments.

We must stop to take notice.

Use all of your senses for

an experience preferred.

We can describe them,

but we’ve got to choose our words.

Choose your words.

Choose your words.

   Lets wake up these senses…

Early on a Sunday, I woke up to write.

My eyes were tired and my back was stiff,

so I stretched, and walked outside.

The sweet smell of begonias,

the taste of nectarines,

I pulled one off my tree,

and I felt the grass beneath my feet.

Chorus

“The Sun had poked his head out.”

I wrote on my first line,

a personification’s

a non-living thing alive.

I heard the wind-a-whistle

like a train-a-rollin’ by.  That’s a simile.

This moment’s where I long to be,

thank my senses I’m alive.

Chorus x2

Lyrics

SELLING MY BEDROOM

It’s all for sale, I’m selling my bedroom

It’s all for sale, I’m selling my bedroom

It’s all for sale, I’m selling my bedroom

It’s all for sale

Well step right up and don’t be shy!

You’re in the place to be

if you’re looking to buy.

This is the marvelous bedroom of Jonny D.

Everything is for sale, well, except for me.

Take a good look around and drink it all in.

I’ve got incredible goods,

on which you can bid.

You can have the whole package

for a small expense,

of only $7,000,000 and 99 cents!

(That’s cheap!)

Chorus

Sunday, Sunday, Sunday, this Sunday!

The first three customers will get a free ice cream Sunday!

That’s a Free Ice Cream Sunday to the first three on Sunday!

Offer only available to the first three customers on Sunday.

(Additional promotions do not apply.)

I’ve got one purple sock with two little holes,

and one half of a banana peel

that’s three days old,

next to three custom paper

airplanes on my desk,

and I’ll sell them as a package

for just 70 cents.

But if you act now,

and throw in one more dime,

I’d be willing to part ways

with three red vines.

In fact, I’ve got a whole candy stash

under my bed…

next to three Harry Potter books

I’ve already read…. Shazaam!

 Chorus

   Hmm.. let’s see what else…

If you’re looking for posters

I’ve got a few of

super heroes, sports teams,

and a kangaroo.

I’ve got Lego castle that I made

with my friend Steve,

a 5000 piece puzzle of a chimpanzee.

Just name your price

and we can make a deal.

Even my teddy bear’s for sale

and some skateboard wheels.

I’ve got this notepad of stories

that I wrote at school,

but I’m not selling that

because it’s way too cool.

Lyrics

WHAT COULD BE BETTER?

What could be better..?

That’s what we ask

when we revise.

What could be better..?

Improve the story

you’ve devised.

Go on and write it down!

My story’s got 3 little pigs.

A big bad wolf trying to

blow down houses made

out of straw and sticks,

which were no problem

until he found that last house

 was made out of bricks.

That hungry wolf now had a

task. He was a huffin’ and a

puffin,’ down, which isn’t bad,

but have you asked…

What could be better?

What if the pigs were

chimpanzees?

What could be better..?

They’d make their houses

in the trees!

Maybe I’ll change the big

bad wolf to something.

After all… how could he

climb high? Maybe a robot

on a trampoline, who’s not

so bad… maybe polite!

Perhaps the wolf is a giraffe,

with a long a neck and

purple spots. The only way

to make his spots turn brown

is eating chimpanzees

for lunch.

CHORUS

The first chimp’s house could

be made out of origami.

The second chimp’s of

rainbow looms.

What could be better than a

huffin’ and a puffin’?

Maybe the giraffe could…

sing tunes!

Its singing voice would be

so terrible that the walls

could come falling down!

The third chimp’s house

could be a magical Lego

castle that’s… underground!

What could be better?

The chimpanzees now

safe and sound!

What could be better?

I can’t forget to

write it down!

Go on and write it down!

The second write is

consistently better than

the first.

Your choice is a question:

make it better or leave

it worse?

Does your dialogue contain

everything that you wish..?

Do you start off with a bang?

A hook your reader can’t miss?

Is it better, or the best?

Are you proud of your work?

Settle for nothing less than

being 100 percent sure!

Revising is the best step

if you’re up to the task.

When you think you’re finished

Think about what you mean.

Think about what you write down or say.

Lyrics

OREO

I’m brave! Gonna speak my mind. (OREO)

Make a change, one day at a time. (OREO)

If you’re going to change the world, you better start with an opinion.

If you’re going to change the world, we better start now.

First choose a side.

Do you prefer vanilla

or chocolate ice cream better?

When’s your favorite time to play outside?

Summer, spring, fall or winter?

An opinion is

a belief, or a point of view.

It’s a feeling, which

is a perspective unique to you.

I’m brave! Gonna speak my mind. (OREO)

Make a change, one day at a time. (OREO)

If you’re going to change the world, you better start with an opinion.

If you’re going to change the world, we better start now.

“O” stands for an opinion.

It’s the first thing you need to write.

“R” represents your reasons,

your feelings, beliefs. Why do you think you right..?

“E” stands for evidence,

which are facts that support how you’ve felt.

“O” Finally restate your opinion.

Now it’s ready to dive into this world of milk.

CHORUS

“O” is for an opinion.

Better state this first…

How do you feel believe or

think about the subject’s worth?

Follow that thought with the “R”

it stands for “reasons,” you see…

you’ve gotta write down why

you think the thought

you’ve thunk that you think!

Now your reasons for “why”

need to be supported with facts.

That’s what the “E” stands for.

It’s your proof, it’s your “evidence.”

Without evidence, you won’t really

have a strong case.

The last “O” is “opinion,”

which you’ll need to restate.

OREO

Get your head right. Put your O up!

OREO

Put your O up. Put your O up!

CHORUS

Go!
