Managing Your Own “Self-Care”

As an administrator, you are expected to be “on” at all times.  But anyone who has been in leadership understands that we are “all human” and we all have our “moments.”  So, what do you do when you feel frustrated or overwhelmed?  The answer: self-care.

First, it is important to take planned breaks throughout the day.  The Site Administrator role builds in a personal lunch break from 1:25 to 1:55 daily.  Additionally, there are times throughout the day when you are observing classrooms or taking photos.  This time can also be used for a 5-10 minute break.

Second, it is helpful to have a sounding board.  We recommend turning to your Assistant Site Administrator when you need to talk about a situation or problem. You may find that you develop rapport with a teacher or Secretary of Shenanigans.  It is o.k. to discuss issues related to campers or parents, but please refrain from discussing staff issues with members of your team.  If you need to talk about specific staff members, please call the home office or another Site Administrator.

Beware of the perception of favorites! Some people are naturally easier to get along with than others.  However, as a manager, you must treat your team equally.  If you are perceived as playing favorites, not only can it lead to unrest among your team, but it can have more serious HR repercussions as well.
