Camp Staff

Jami Peters, Site Administrator

Teaching is an absolute passion of mine! I grew up in Chino Hills and graduated from Ayala High School in 2002. I moved to Orange over a year ago and love it there. I am the youngest of 2. I graduated from San Jose State University with a major in psychology and minor in social work. I was a caseworker at Boys Republic before I moved out to Huntington Beach to be closer to family in 2008. I knew my senior year in San Jose that I wanted to work with children and make a difference, so I attended Azusa Pacific University receiving a masters in education and a multiple subject credential. I have been teaching for eight years and I absolutely love it. I taught third grade and junior high math and science courses in a private school. I am currently teaching sixth grade for a public school and I am grade level chair for all the fifth and sixth grade teachers at our campus. In addition, I am in the program for future administrators for my school district. I absolutely love teaching. It is my mission to instill a love for learning in my students. I attempt to teach with a passion for learning so that my students develop a desire to become life-long learners. I look forward to a great camp together!

Vanessa Chi, Writing Ranger (1st Grade)

“Create something that will make the world awesome!” - Kid President. When I was little, I wrote countless of stories of my own. Some about princesses fighting dragons, some about the places I visited, some about friends. I wrote because I wanted to express my feelings concretely, intentionally, and purposefully. Hello there, my name is Vanessa Chi and I finished my first year as a classroom teacher! I received my multiple subjects teaching credential and Masters of Education from University of California, San Diego. Besides education, I love eating good food, drinking milk tea, and going to the beach. Feeling the sand between my toes calms my mind and fuels my creativity, in writing or drawing! I also LOVE cats, anything cat related makes me smile! I am super excited to work as a ranger because I love kids, especially the little ones. I can’t wait to inspire kids to write with big imaginations. Let’s create something awesome, together!

Kari Munoz, Writing Ranger

Kari earned her Undergraduate from Cal State Fullerton in Health Science, specifically Health Education, and minored in Kinesiology. Through college, she coached girls softball in Orange, and taught after school Chess throughout Orange County. She earned her Multiple Subject Teaching Credential program through Cal State Fullerton, with an emphasis in Arts and Creativity. Since then, she has been substitute teaching in Fullerton, She is passionate about science, writing, fun, and creativity! She loves hands on learning, especially being able to incorporate games and manipulatives when learning. In her free time, Kari likes to play softball, hang out outdoors, and spend time with family. She can't wait to work this summer with Adventures in Writing!

Clare Reiland, Writing Ranger (Middle School)

Clare is SO excited for camp!! She is originally from Irvine, but she just moved back to Orange County from San Francisco, where she pursued a Master's Degree in Teaching at the University of San Francisco. Clare's been a part of various classrooms throughout San Francisco and the SF Bay Area, but she is excited to return where her own education started! Outside of the classroom, she enjoys listening to music, hiking, traveling, and (of course) writing! This is her second year at AIW. She's so excited to meet the campers and to have a great summer!!

Elizabeth Rangel, Adventure Guide (Counselor)

Elizabeth is an extremely passionate person. Some of her passions include animals, reading, Disney movies (her favorite is Ratatouille), music, and sports - but most of all, she is passionate about helping others! Elizabeth always tries to devote her time to volunteering, tutoring, and any other way that she can help people. This is her second year at Adventures in Writing Camp, and she can't wait to meet everyone!

Josephine Catalusci Medina, Adventure Guide (Counselor)

Josephine Medina is incredibly excited for her second year at Adventures in Writing Camp! She is currently attending Vanguard University as a sophomore psychology and history major. She has worked as a camp counselor at several camps, with children of all ages, and is thrilled to help students create their own spectacular stories! Nothing is more amazing than a homemade story! She loves hiking, exploring, and traveling; and enjoys nothing more than a good book and some hot chocolate.

Philip Black, Entertainment Ranger

This is Philip Black's third summer working with Adventures in Writing Camp, and he is THRILLED to be back. He received his B.A. in Theatre Performance from Huntington University (in Huntington, IN), where he was a member of the Alpha Chi Honor Society, the Alpha Psi Omega Theatre Honor Society, and a Colloquium Scholar. He has spent the past 10 years working at theaters across America, performing mostly in comedies and musicals. Making people laugh is the thing he enjoys most, followed closely by reading. As he has traveled, he has made a point of always joining the local library. (At last count, he has 5 active library cards.) Along the way, Philip has also developed a distinct passion for teaching, helping to run educational "backstage experience" tours in Michigan, doing interactive Treasure Island performances for grade students in Missouri, and teaching for two summers at Camp Melodrama, a theatrical camp for students K-8 in California's Central Coast. He currently spends his days during the school year as a full-time presenter with California Weekly Explorer, running "game show" styled interactive history presentations for grades 4-6 all over Orange County.

Ava Weber, Adventure Guide (Counselor)

Ava Weber realized her love of creative writing during her sophomore year of high school. She started writing silly stories for her friends and found them asking her for more! She has deepened her love of writing by majoring in English at UCLA with the ultimate goal of obtaining a masters degree in screenwriting. She loves school, and wishes to share her love through teaching. Ava has taken French for five years and has gone on two study abroad programs to France. She speaks French conversationally. Don't hesitate to test her when you see her at camp!

Mackenzie West, Adventure Guide (Counselor)

My name is Mackenzie West and I am so excited to get to know your children over the next couple weeks! I just finished my junior year at Clemson University in South Carolina, where I am majoring in Elementary Education. After I graduate in May 2020, I plan on becoming a teacher in grades 2-6! Although I go to school on the east coast, I grew up in Los Alamitos, CA, and spend all of my summers here! During my free time I love to read, spend time with friends and family, and cook. When I was a kid, I participated in a similar camp and even to this day, I am so thankful for the skills that I learned during that week! I cannot wait to foster your child?s love for writing and make them excited every time they get to write!

Madelyn Nye, Adventure Guide (Counselor)

Hi all! My name is Madelyn Nye and I am currently a student at the University of San Diego! I am studying communications with a minor in marketing and psychology. I have loved writing since I was little, and am so excited to help others love writing too. I got to further strengthen my writing and editing skills as editor-in-chief of my high school's, Rosary Academy, yearbook. I have had the opportunity to volunteer at many summer camps, such as All the Arts Camp in Fullerton and Us in the Sun camp at St. Martin de Porres in Yorba Linda, to strengthen both my leadership skills and my confidence in working with children. Besides writing, I love to dance, travel, sing (even though I'm not the best), go to Disneyland and just have fun with my friends and family! My favorite Disney movie is Aladdin, however I do love them all! I'm known to my friends as outgoing, friendly, confident, and loyal. I am so excited to meet everyone at camp this summer and can't wait for all the adventures!

Zachary Peterson, Adventure Guide (Counselor)

Zachary’s love of language is only outmatched by his passion for learning. A recent graduate of California State University Fullerton, with Bachelor’s Degrees in both English and Theater, Zachary is currently pursuing a career in education. Realizing from a young age that someone had to be making edu-tainment programs like Sesame Street and Blues Clues, Zachary has devoted much of his life to inspiring the same level of joy in learning new things. In his spare time Zachary enjoys old films, board games, and carpentry. His own writing is focused on fantasy and science fiction, which he likes to bring to life with table-top games. He is excited to share his passion for writing and creating this summer with Adventures in Writing!

Hiking, kayaking, rock climbing, backpacking, camping, if it involves the sunshine and beautiful landscape, count her in. I am excited to work with each child and help their imaginations come alive in story writing!

Carly is eager to take her love of learning and her sense of adventure to make this summer, a summer your child will never forget!

Jack Sorenson, Supervised Play Scout

Jack Sorenson is a new addition to Adventures in Writing Camp and someone who is constantly learning. Whether it be exploring the outdoors on weekends, reading a great book, or playing music, he never passes up an opportunity to experience something new.

Jack is an avid writer and reader himself, and can’t wait to help campers discover their own love for stories and writing. Be it by playing songs on the guitar or making up a dance, Jack is always ready to make learning fun and interesting.

Jack has tutored and babysat and is an active volunteer in his community. He is currently attending San Clemente High School where he is a honor roll student, and he hopes to study English and writing in college.

Keely OLoughlin Camp, Assistant Site Administrator

We're excited to welcome back Keely for her third year with AIW! She has been an Adventure Guide as well as an Entertainment Ranger so she knows this camp pretty well by now. Keely lives in Southern California during the school year and spends most of her time either working as a Behavior Therapist or attending school at UC Irvine. She majors in Psychology and Social Behavior with a minor in Education. When she is not busy with work or school, Keely enjoys reading, hiking/being outdoors, baking/cooking, playing basketball, and enjoying time with friends!
