Adventures in Writing Camp will be offering a two week “elementary only” session in the “clubhouse” classrooms at Helen Wills Playground this summer. This space is the home to a preschool during the school year, and we will bring in age/size appropriate tables/chairs for the summer. This PacHeights session will combine campers entering 2nd and 3rd into one group, and campers entering 4th and 5th into a second group. This location will NOT offer the first grade or middle school programs. The nearest locations with 1st grade and Middle School for this summer will be in the Inner Richmond or Glen Park. Though smaller in scale, this two week session will still be taught by credentialed teachers, and will feature the same curriculum, music, and activities that have helped so many campers build confidence and fall in love with writing!

MEET THE TEAM

Aaron Kierbel, Entertainment Ranger

Hi I’m Aaron Kierbel and I’m not going to pretend that someone else is writing this for me by talking about myself in the 3rd person.I’m a professional drummer and the founder of Rhythm•ALL•ogy, an interactive drumming company which uses rhythm to build connection and community. A few extra things about me:I like having a good hair day, seeing someone on the street singing to themselves and old men playing chess in the park. I like non-verbal communication, wearing mismatched socks and eating raw garlic. I like to make music, sandwiches and friends. I have never been able to properly say the word "rural." I dislike commercials, smelling other people's B.O on public busses, bad poetry, uncomfortable elevator banter, erasable pens, passive aggresiveness and the word "whodunit," when referring to a genre of movie or story.I am excited for my first summer as Entertainment Ranger at AIW camp!!!!

Lukas Kasimor, Adventure Guide (Counselor)

Lukas Kasimor used to be a wizard! Or that's what he loved to imagine when he was writing short stories in middle school. He was casting spells and making potions to become a powerful writer! He loved to write short stories with his friends when he was younger sometimes pretending to be a spy, treasure hunter, cowboy or wizard! This is Lukas's second session as an Adventure Guide and he is excited to help kids learn while having a fun time doing it! As always he is ready to help kids get their creativity going and grow to become big and strong writers. When he is not helping kids learn, he is a student at Northeastern University in the sometimes snowy city of Boston! There he studies International Affairs and is getting a minor in Computer Science. At school, Lukas also is a big rugby player and loves to do charity work in the community around his school. Last semester he took an acting classes where we got to be as silly as possible. While he goes to school in Boston, he was raised in San Francisco and knows it like the back of his hand! Lukas loves to work with kids as he has helped mentor younger kids throughout his time in middle and high school, where he was on duty to make sure everyone was having fun!

Aisling O'Mahony, Adventure Guide (Counselor)

Aisling is excited to work as a camp counselor this summer and can't wait to share her love of reading and writing with the kids! She has just completed her BA in English and History and is looking forward to starting her Masters in English Literature this September. When she's not reading and writing she loves to travel and also loves to get involved in theatre. She has directed and acted in several productions and is always singing and dancing.

Agnes Zhu, Adventure Guide (Counselor)

Agnes is an upcoming senior at UC Santa Cruz, double majoring in Legal Studies and Politics. Go Banana Slugs! Her hopes are to become a lawyer in the future, either practicing Administrative or Property Law. The ultimate goal is to work for the government. Outside of academics, you will most likely see her participating in many service events because she believes that service is a meaningful way to give back to the community. Besides that, she loves listening to music and is always trying to find new artists to listen to. Agnes is currently deep into k-pop, but her music taste varies quite a bit. You can usually see her listening to music during her free time. She likes high energy environments because it makes her feel more energized!

Grace Wilson, eBook Ranger

Grace Wilson, a Michigan native (Go Blue!), is ecstatic to bring her love of teaching with a focus on the growth mindset, mindfulness and student ownership to Adventures in Writing. Grace graduated with her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from American University where she played the best sport in the world-- field hockey. Grace stayed in Washington D.C., where she taught first and second grade and moved to the Bay Area to continue teaching second grade. When she is not teaching, Grace loves taking her niece and nephew on new adventures in the bay area, running, hiking, trying all the newest fitness classes and drinking all the coffee.

Marcela Araujo, Secretary of Shenanigans

Hello!
My name is Marcela Araujo, and I am an Adventure Guide counselor!I am currently on my last semester as an undergrad at San Francisco State University. I have been studying psychology and philosophy for the past six years! I will be applying for the masters program of Mind, Brain and behavior and continue as a Graduate student in the Fall of 2019. I also enjoy my time outside of school. At first I started as a camp ground assistant where I would teach kids how to camp, and then I learned to be a homework assistant which prepared me to teach the youngsters how to complete their homework and then play outside. Now as an Adventure Guidance Counselor I am able to integrate both learning environments to teach all the skills they need! I also love to take care of our environment by gardening and planting trees. My two favorite hobbies are swimming and dancing, modern dance and Brazilian dance. Hablo español y Portugués.
